A New Braid, A New Life
This Jewish marriage canopy (chuppah) was commissioned by an engaged couple about to combine families. I was inspired by the Celtic chain bordering their ketubah (a traditional Jewish marriage contract). The braid is reminiscent of the braided challah bread served for Sabbath and festival meals. Most important, it also seemed symbolic of the marriage that would ensue: two individuals weaving together the unique strands of their very full and active lives into a new, even richer, life together.
Materials: commercial cotton, velvet, organza, nylon polyester; cotton batting, cotton and polyester thread
Techniques: fused appliqué, machine pierced and quilted
